Children's refuge Nesa Karangal

In Nesa Karangal (Compassionate Hands in the Tamil language) a comprehensive educational program with boys and girls aged between eleven and eighteen is being developed. There is no discrimination for matters of sex, religion or caste which makes Nesa Karangal a reference centre for this corner of South India.
Boys and girls from different castes and religions share the same recreation and living space.
At this moment, 63 boys and girls live in the centre and each morning they attend lessons in a nearby school. In the afternoons they do their homework or participate in different educational activities, such as music or dance.
They also have free time that they use for playing cricket, football or strolling in the surroundings of the centre.
The kids are responsible for their few belongings, including clothes, toiletries and school material, and they actively participate in the daily tasks in Nesa Karangal: helping out in the kitchen, sweeping the floor or working in the family garden. The centre has a infirmary that also functions as a first aid centre for the neighbourhood.
